He was repaying that declaration of "love" by setting her free -which, for all he knew, might have been his last official act before dying because he, too, cared for her deeply as well. This shows that beneath their major struggles, more than anything else, she was devastated by his dying of Cancer, and that she truly cared for him. She embraces him tenderly and calls him "Baby," and tries to console him before rushing to get him help. and the tone shifts utterly and instantly. The point of the slack consequences is that they are arrived at because of longstanding personal interrelationships.įor example, why the Police Chief lets Mildred go after she drills a hole in the dentist: Beyond the fact that it's a he said/she said difficult thing to prove, there's the most important element:ĭuring the scene, The Chief is coming down on her hard, and she's giving him a hard time in return, like adversaries. There are great scenes in this movie, it looks fantastic, and great acting, but I found the plot infuriatingly disconnected, contrived, and weak. The new police chief is basically powerless to change anything and even in the face of a serious abuse of power lets Dixon go, I was hoping that character could represent change, modernization, and conflict but instead comes off weak and powerless because taking real action would have ruined Dixons redemption storyline. The guy who hangs the billboards is basically magic and produces the second set of billboards out of nowhere. In the film Denise is a plot device to get Dixon and Mildred into a standoff scene with each other. We never get to see how Dixon's racist and manipulative nature directly affects this person, we don't get to see the defeat and reality of racism reflected in Denise and what that means to people like her. It's insulting to the actor and character in the film.

This action shows how despicable and racist Dixon is but my problem is that everything happens off camera, Denise isn't even arrested on camera and then later in the movie she just drives up out of nowhere all happy and smiling. A prime example is how Dixon plants drugs and arrests Mildred's friend Denise to try to get to Mildred. I was also super annoyed at how the black characters were treated as props in this movie. I felt like these interesting little scenes were written by themselves and then awkwardly shoved together in some less than believable ways. To me the biggest thing is how utterly contrived so much of the movie is, the decisions people make aren't organic they only setup dramatic scenes and the end result is this mess of random actions, dialogue, and consequences. I hated this movie also, I agree with most of your points and have a lot more. Darkest Hour and Shape of Water were very good. So far I think Get Out should have won best picture, followed by Dunkirk. Maybe someone here who enjoyed it can tell me what I missed, because I was really disappointed. It was such a stupid, stupid fucking script. Mildred firebombs the police station from across the street, and when the police arrive they let her go because the local midget says she was with him - no investigation, despite the fact she obviously left a ton of evidence in the building across the street.

Mildred drills a hole through a dentist's thumb and the police chief just lets her go, despite the fact the dentist is pressing full charges.
There's no consequences to any actions - the redneck cop nearly beats a man to death for no reason and simply gets fired. There were so many cheese-dick moments that made me cringe: the suicide notes were horribly cheesy, the attempts at humour were garbage (particularly the ex-husband's dumb girlfriend when she interrupts the family fight). Some of the acting performances were comically bad - her son was HORRENDOUS to the point I laughed out loud. I love Frances McDormand and am not disputing her best actress award because she did a great job in this, but wow I can't fathom how this won best screenplay and best picture at the Golden Globes.
I watched Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri last night and WOW was I let down. I saw Shape of Water in theatres last week - I thought it was very good, not great. I'm finally getting around to watching all the Best Picture nominees/winner.
